Who is Jesmalestiel?

Talia Franks Jesmalestiel

Jesmalestiel is the username that Talia Franks hides behind while writing fanfiction. Talia (they/them) is poet, a writer, a reader, a translator, a podcaster, and above all a creative who likes their feminism intersectional and their entertainment diverse.

Talia is co-host, executive producer, and social media manager of The Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey Podcast and the host and chief officer of everything at Into the Archives, a monthly fanfiction podcast (on hiatus!)

Their goal is to spark passion in the hearts of their readers and foster human connection through the written word, making the world a better place through their writing.

This is done through fanfiction, as well as through posts about about fandomphilosophypaganismwriting & social justice alongside their book reviews on Word-for-Sense and Other Stories.

An active and critical participant in the Doctor Who, Marvel, Percy Jackson, and Harry Potter fandoms, they’ve written multiple articles for Black Nerds Create and Nerdist.

Talia has written reviews of poetry and prose in translation for Three Percent, and their poetry and translations have appeared in Mass Poetry’s The Hard Work of Hope, the Brandeis University publications Jaded and Ebony Axis. Additionally, they are a contributor to These Bewitching Bonds: A Black Girls Create Anthology.

Talia is a graduate of Brandeis University and holds a master of arts in comparative humanities, their studies focusing in the realms of language, critical race theory, fandom, and religion. They are also an alum of the Bread Loaf Translators’ Conference and of the Columbia Publishing Course.

When not reading, writing, podcasting, or translating Talia enjoys hiking, swimming, meditation, spending time with friends and family, indexing their personal library, and trying to find more time in their schedule to read.
